Starting the day with a quick sweet pastry – note the healthy juice, gives you some strength for a morning stroll in Villa Borghese before heading for lunch to the famous Roscioli – Salumeria Con Cucina. They say you get the best Carbonara there and it is true but the place brings back memories of a wonderful seafood friend..
Roscioli is a salumeria, a deli combined with a bar, a restaurant and a wine cellar dining room. It was on our list to get a decent Carbonara but were pleasantly surprised as is sometimes the case. The starter “Herbed salted ricotta” with bread was beautiful, light introduction before we got heavy with the Carbonara. So heavy that I actually forgot to take a picture of it:-) No, not really – I did forget to take a picture but rather because of my next dish, a “Cold datterini tomatoes soup with raw octopus”. It was really hard to say who was the main actor here; the octopus so pure and so good but the soup was brilliant with an extremely intense flavour – and I am typically not a fan of cold soups.
That’s how to spend an enjoyable lunch and now a tip for a sit down coffee / tea break when you need more than just a bar and a 1 minute coffee break, then GiNa will make you happy. Close to the Spanish Steps, GiNa welcomes you with its white in white room. You find panini, salads, ice cream, more hearty dishes and they can prepare picnic baskets for a perfect afternoon in Villa Borghese park..
If that was too girlie for you, go and try “Sant’ Eustachio” around the corner of the Pantheon, a traditional coffee roasting house established in 1938.
An Italian day would not be complete without an Aperitivo and for this we head to Gusto Osteria & Formaggeria. Gusto can be called a Food Imperium with several addresses covering a proper restaurant, a cook tool / book store, an Osteria, a Formaggeria, etc. All venues are located in close proximity to each other. Opinions about this place are mixed and I’ve been to the Osteria a couple of years ago and from what I remember food was ok but not too outstanding. Anyhow, the place is just perfect for a relaxed aperitivo for 10 quid (sorry euros) a head..
